The beret is a symbol of revolution.  Historically, berets symbolize non-conformism, resistance, and militance; globally they are often worn as a part of military uniforms.  Special Forces, known better as the Green Berets, considered the beret as a symbol of their becoming members of an elite group of soldiers.
